How small retailers are doing Amazon Prime Day amid Covid-19 pandemic

Amazon’s annual two-day Prime Day sales event kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 13 after the coronavirus pandemic delayed the event for months. 

For the more than 1.7 million small- and medium-sized businesses around the world that sell their products on Amazon, the massive annual shopping event could help provide a boost in a year that’s been racked with uncertainty as a result of Covid-19.

Prime Day, which dates back to 2015 and typically runs in mid-July, begins at midnight on Tuesday and runs through Oct. 14. During that time, the e-commerce giant could generate nearly $10 billion in global sales, according to an estimate from research company eMarketer.

Amazon doesn’t release specific revenue numbers around its Prime Day events, but the company said it sold more than 175 million items during last year’s Prime Day.

Keeping hands clean becomes second nature amid pandemic

Keeping the hands clean is one of the major defenses anybody could have against coronavirus. Perhaps the constant reminding of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) may have paid off, as new research showed that more people are remembering to keep their hands clean by washing. The U.S. CDC looked at six scenarios involving young adults and handwashing and they tried to determine if these young people do remember to wash their hands. The six scenarios that CDC tested include checking if people washed their hands after coughing or sneezing, before eating at home, before food preparation at home, before eating at restaurants, after bathroom use at home, and after bathroom use in public.

Cleaning and sanitization are currently of utmost importance, but one of the first things struggling businesses cut are these types of services.

The cleaning service industry has taken some hits since the COVID-19 pandemic arrived earlier this year.

Jessica Shrader, an independent operator of Jessica’s Sonshine Cleaning in Monessen, said she just recently lost two of her bigger customers because of cuts.

However, Shrader has maintained most of her customer base, which includes banks and office spaces in Bentleyville, Speers, Elizabeth and around the Mon Valley.

“I do basic office cleaning, and also clean around their bathrooms and kitchens, remove the garbage. For the most part, I’m doing OK,” Shrader said. “I did recently lose two of my bigger jobs, in Charleroi and Washington.

At 8,500 square feet, Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten’s new shop — his seventh — is his largest, bigger than the ones in his hometown of Antwerp, Belgium, or in Paris. Located on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles, in the home of a former jewelry factory and across from the stalwart diner Norms, the spacious store, which opened Friday, would feel ambitious in scope even if it weren’t for the fact that it came together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
