Carolyn Joyce Viss – West Central Tribune

Carolyn Viss, 84, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Willmar, died Monday, April 4th, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 12th at Rock of Life CRC in Willmar with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until the time of the service. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Carolyn was born September 23, 1937, in Clara City, Minnesota, the daughter of Helmer and Carrie (Ryks) Negen. She grew up on a farm and attended school in Clara City. She was united in marriage to Paul Viss in Georgia. Following their marriage, they lived in Willmar and later moved to Hancock where they raised their six boys. She was active in the Hancock Christian Reformed Church. Throughout her life, Carolyn worked a variety of jobs, including cooking at the Country Kitchen in Morris and also did housekeeping and housecleaning for different families. Paul and Carolyn moved back to Willmar following their retirement. They enjoyed traveling for several years with their fifth wheel camper and motorhome and later enjoyed spending several winters in Arizona. In April of 2017, Paul and Carolyn moved to Trail Ridge, a retirement community in Sioux Falls, to be closer to family.

Carolyn enjoyed making beautiful quilts and giving them to her family, giving each grandchild one for high school graduation. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, cleaning, crocheting, and embroidery. Visiting with family and friends, and playing cards and other games was another favorite pastime.

Surviving are her husband, Paul; sons: Barton (Julie) Viss of Sioux Falls, SD; Jackson of Sauk Rapids, MN; Joel (Margaret) Viss of Chatfield, MN; Todd (Kim) Viss of Merced, CA; Eric (Unsuk) Viss of Susanville, CA; and daughter-in-law, Bonita Viss of Talmoon, MN; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Alma Blom of Willmar; and sister-in-law, Joyce (Joe) VanDerKwaak of Terrace, BC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and in-laws, she was preceded in death by her son, Bradley, in 2012; granddaughter, Hannah, in 1985; brother, Hank (Reka) Negen, and sisters, Helen (George) Fuls, Rena (Fred) Asche, and Jeanette (Chuck) Hubers. She was also preceded in death by her nieces, Marlys Ruis and Karen Viss, nephews, Danny Hubers, James Viss and Jerry Asche, and sister-in-law, Norma Viss and brothers-in-law, Norman Viss and Alvin Blom.
