EV Hummer gets ‘crabby’
GM’s new electric Hummer will be able to go sideways. Or in GMC-speak, it will “crab.” The new GMC HUMMER EV will be revealed on Tuesday, Oct. 20. And as a video on its new website at gmc.com/electric-truck/hummer-ev shows, it will have Crab Mode. Due to its four-wheel steering capability, the HUMMER EV can move in a diagonal direction. GMC says that’s “tailor-made for off-roading customers.” Customer reservations begin on Oct. 20 at GMC.com.
Dream designs from GMC
Meanwhile, GMC has shown some designs its team of stylists have been playing with in their spare time. But be aware – the renderings popped on Instagram are just dream designs. Karan Moorjani drew a sleek-yet-muscular Sierra pickup with glaring thin LED headlights and a flowing fender flares to its body design, plus low roof and snarling grill. Then Joe Boniface’s future GMC Denali Heavy Duty gets stacked triple LED headlights athwart a tall grille with silver framing and some chrome elsewhere.
Porsche marks 70th birthday
Porsche is celebrating 70 years in America, a history begun in the fall of 1950 when Ferdinand Porsche met New York importer Max Hoffman, and the first two 1.1-liter 356 coupes were delivered to him. Eventually, they agreed on a U.S. import contract of 15 cars per year. Porsche of America Corporation was started in 1955, then became part of the Porsche Audi division of Volkswagen of America in 1969, then Porsche Cars North America in 1984.
Hubert Brundage sold VWs, then Porsches on North Main Street in Jacksonville back then, under the name Brumos. And in 2015, Porsche Cars North America itself moved South, as in Atlanta, with its Porsche Experience Center and driver development track.
EV truck coming for drinks delivery
There will be a new soft drink delivery vehicle that gets all its on-road fizz from electricity — the Volta Zero. The vehicle starts production in 2022, a fully electric truck designed for inner-city freight deliveries, with a range of 95 to 125 miles. Drinks Cubed, a London-based sustainable drinks brand, has ordered a fleet of Volta Zero vehicles, which use naturally grown flax fiber and biodegradable resin composite in its exterior body panels.
Off-road rally, emergency EVs for Nissan
A Nissan Frontier will compete in the longest off-road rally in the United States with a boost from NISMO, the manufacturer’s performance brand, using a new line of off-road suspension, bumper, off-road lighting and wheels. Team Wild Grace co-captains Sedona Blinson and Lyn Woodward will compete in the 2020 Rebelle Rally, which began Thursday in Lake Tahoe and culminates Oct. 17 in California’s Imperial Sand Dunes. The NISMO off-road parts will be available for the 2005-2020 model year Frontier, 2016-2021 model year Titan and 2005-2015 model year Xterra later this fall.
Meanwhile, Nissan unveiled an electric emergency response vehicle concept that provides a mobile power supply during natural disasters or extreme weather events. Called RE-LEAF, the working prototype is based on the Nissan LEAF passenger car. Alongside modifications to navigate roads covered in debris, the RE-LEAF has weatherproof plug sockets mounted directly to the exterior of the vehicle to power 110- to 230-volt devices. Its battery system can also “push” power back to the grid as a portable power station.
