Police have launched an investigation after a woman was found dead inside a bathroom at a McDonald’s restaurant in North Carolina.
Officers responded to the fast food restaurant in Huffman Mill Road, in Burlington, on Monday after the discovery was reported at around 3 p.m., according to local news station WFMY.
The woman is around 50 years old, rival station WXII reported, but no other details about her were immediately released.
The cause of death remains unknown, but according to Fox8, officers at the scene reported no signs of foul play nor any obvious signs of drug use.
The situation was described as medical, the station reported. The investigation is ongoing.
It is not clear if the woman’s death may have been linked to coronavirus, but Alamance and Guilford counties—where Burlington is located—have some of the highest numbers of infections in the state.
Alamance County has 3,950 confirmed cases of COVID-19—the disease caused by the novel coronavirus—and 54 deaths, while Guildford County has 8,635 cases and 180 deaths, according to the latest figures from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
In a statement to Newsweek, Adrian Smith, a local McDonald’s franchise owner and operator, said: “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate circumstance within our community. The health and safety of our employees and customers is always a top priority and we are fully cooperating with the Burlington Police Department and awaiting the completion of their investigation.”
The Burlington Police Department have been contacted for additional comment.
The incident in Burlington is not the first time a body has been discovered at a McDonald’s restaurant this year.
A man was found dead and wrapped in plastic on top of a McDonald’s restaurant in The Bronx borough of New York City in July.
Police officers found 65-year-old Richard Hamlet’s body after receiving a 911 call from the restaurant’s staff about an unconscious man on the roof of the building located at 279 East 149 Street in July, according to reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people have since been arrested for allegedly taking part in Hamlet’s murder. The New York Daily News reported that the man was forced to drink cleaning fluid before his body was dumped on the McDonald’s roof.
Police said three suspects had forced their way into Hamlet’s apartment on July 15, beat and strangled him before forcing him to drink cleaning fluid and take pills until he died.
The suspects then allegedly wrapped Hamlet’s body in plastic and threw him from a window in the apartment building and he landed on the roof of the McDonald’s next door.
